Family photography in Belgravia — London's Most Elegant Backdrop

Where to shoot, what to expect, and why this quietly beautiful neighbourhood is one of the best kept secrets for family photography in London

I find that Belgravia doesn't get talked about enough as a photography location and I think that's partly what makes it so good. It sits right between Victoria station and Sloane Square, it's easy to get to, and yet it feels a world away from the tourist crowds of central London. The streets are wide and fairly quiet, the white stucco townhouses and garden squares photograph beautifully, and there's a relaxed elegance to the whole neighbourhood that works particularly well for family photography in London.

For family photography in Belgravia specifically, it works on every level. The streets are quiet enough for children to feel relaxed, there's real variety within a short walk, and the combination of formal architecture and green open squares means you can shift the whole mood of a shoot just by turning a corner. I've done a number of family photoshoots here and look forward to many more.

The locations I keep coming back to

Elizabeth Street is the heart of the neighbourhood, it's one of my favourite streets in London and it's usually where I start a Belgravia family photoshoot. There are many beautiful doorways and shopfronts like Peggy Porschen, and the whole street has a village feel that puts families at ease. I usually turn the corner by St Michael's Church in Chester Square, which is slightly less well known than Eaton Square, but I find that the doorways of the townhouses have more detail with columns, painted doors, tree elements, which adds real character. And if you turn the corner in another direction you'll find hidden gems like the beautiful red doorway on the corner of Eaton Terrace and Chester Row, which has appeared in more than a few of my couple shoots. The greenery by Eaton Square is great and gives a natural backdrop that feels relaxed. For something a bit different, Eccleston Yards is a hidden gem. A converted yard space with independent cafes and a relaxed brunch energy, it photographs brilliantly for families who want something less formal and a bit more relaxed.

The shoot that stayed with me

One of my favourite Belgravia family photography sessions was a group of six sisters who came fully dressed for the occasion. Colourful coordinated outfits for the first half, then a black and white palette for the white terraced houses. We started at Peggy Porschen on Eccleston Street. You've almost certainly seen it on Instagram. The pastel pink facade with its seasonal floral displays is genuinely hard to resist and photographs so beautifully. It works for families, couples, solo portraits and brands, and it was the perfect backdrop for this group.

We shot in the morning when the light hits the facades front-on and the cafe was quieter. Coming early makes a big difference as the queue builds quickly and the spaces outside fill up fast. Handling a group of eight takes time and patience. I always let everyone settle first, get their tea, fix their outfits and put on the high heels. I start by getting everyone to pose, look at the camera and smile. Just to get that picture out of the way and break the fear barrier. Then I capture the interaction as it naturally unfolds. Girls laughing, fixing each other's hair, drinking tea. Those are always the best frames. With this many people, a Belgravia photoshoot like that needs at least two hours to do it properly.

Where to eat afterwards

There are a number of great spots for food near where we shoot.

  • The Buttery at the Lime Tree Hotel on Ebury Street does a lovely relaxed Sunday roast

  • Tomtom Coffee House on Elizabeth Street always seems to have a queue to enjoy sitting outside for a brunch

  • Koub Cafe has a wonderful exterior and a great coffee, sipping a coffee on the bench in front of the store makes for a great shot

  • Wild by Tart is a great choice nearby

Coming up — Belgravia in Bloom, May 2026

If you're planning a Belgravia family photoshoot this spring, try to time it around Belgravia in Bloom, running from 18 to 24 May. The whole neighbourhood gets taken over by floral installations and this year the theme is "Fairy Tales in Belgravia" which honestly sounds perfect for a family shoot. Elizabeth Street, Eccleston Yards and Peggy Porschen will all be decorated. It's free, it's beautiful, and the backdrops will be even more special than usual. May dates go quickly though so I'd book early.

Getting there

  • Nearest tube: Victoria station or Sloane Square station, a few minutes walk from Elizabeth Street and Eccleston Street

  • By car: Westminster pay-and-display bays available on nearby streets, or pre-book at Q-Park Knightsbridge a short walk away

  • Best time of day: morning. The light hits the facades front-on, the streets are at their quietest

  • For larger groups including Peggy Porschen, budget for two hours minimum
